Rob Reiner's dark and witty adaptation of Stephen King's Misery hit the big screen on this day in 1990 and made audiences question the boundaries between admiration and obsession.
In the film, a renowned author named Paul Sheldon (James Caan) survives a car crash, only to be rescued by one of his crazed fans (Kathy Bates), who keeps him in captivity until he's able to meet her demands and rise up to the impossible standard she's set up in her head.
Misery has received the title of a 'fan-favorite' Stephen King movie adaptation, as well as an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for the brilliant work of Kathy Bates.
