Year in review: OCTOBRIA's Top 3 Picks for 2022

Writer's picture: OctobriaOctobria

On the final day of 2022, we'd like to take a moment to look back and celebrate all the spectacular heart-racing horror that was released this year.

It was truly a phenomenal year for horror cinema - no matter if you're into the slasher or the creature feature, there was something new and exciting for everyone this year. We got a variety of mainstream horror like

Halina Reijn's flashy Bodies Bodies Bodies and Scott Derrickson's emotional The Black Phone, as well as some wider releases of our beloved lower-budget flicks like Damien Leone's Terrifier 2. We also got to see some of our favorite legendary psychos make a come-back in David Blue Garcia's Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett's Scream and David Gordon Green's Halloween Ends. We were bolder and braver, Ti West's X and Pearl and Zach Cregger's Barbarian pushed the limits of conventional horror.

(Please note that we barely even scratch the surface of all the brilliant horror films that came out in 2022 with these mentions.)

We'd like to say a big bloody heartfelt thank you to all the creators who brought us together this year and allowed us to face our fears with a smile. And to the community - if it wasn't for your relentless dedication and passion, horror would be a very dark and lonely place. Thank you and here's to a new year filled with terror and thrills - a new year full of horror.

Here are OCTOBRIA'S TOP 3 PICKS FOR 2022:

1. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett's Scream

Twenty-five years after the original, Ghostface returns to Woodsboro with a fresh thirst for blood (and revenge). Ready or not (2019) director duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett pay homage to Wes Craven's original idea and break box office records with the newest installment in the Scream series.

The Carpenter sisters - Tara (Jenna Ortega) and Samantha (Melissa Barrera) face the masked Ghostface killer who's set to turn their lives into another bloody revenge-tale in continuation to the famous 'Stab' series. Led by the survivors of the previous Woodsboro attacks - final girl Sydney, reporter Gale Weathers and ex-officer Dewey, Tara and Sam try to point out the ruthless Ghostface among their close group of friends.

Featuring Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox , David Arquette, Skeet Ulrich, Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Richie Kirsch, Amber Freeman, Wes Hicks and more.

2. Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities (Mini-Series)

Award-winning horror director Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy 2004, Pan's Labyrinth 2006, The Shape of Water 2017) released a collection of terrifying fantasies, wrapped in mistery and intrigue, kept hidden inside the drawers of his Cabinet of Curiosities.

The 8 unique stories lead on different paths of horror and keep viewers on their toes, each bringing in a new horrifying reality for us to explore. Ghost stories like E8 The Murmuring or E6 Dreams in the Witch House, or larger than life science-fiction like E3 The Autopsy or E7 The Viewing, bring forward a thrill of never knowing what's to come around the corner and a child-like curiosity for distinguishing the real from the make-believe.

Starring Lize Johnston, Kevin Keppy, F. Murray Abraham, Rupert Grint, Essie Davis, Andrew Lincoln, Sebastian Roché, Eric André and more.

3. Ti West's Pearl

Shortly after ambitious horror director Ti West's movie debut with controversially sexual and gory film X 2022, followed a controversially sexual and gory prequel Pearl.

Tracing the steps of a 1918 small-town cowgirl Pearl, we're faced with the brutal reality of mundane life, sickness and prejudice. Young and full of hope, Pearl does what she can to get on the ladder to stardom and escape the farm she's destined to spend her life on. There is nothing she won't do to make her dream a reality.

Starring Mia Goth, David Corenswet, Tandi Wright, Matthew Sunderland, Emma Jenkins-Purro and more.
